MY story
Amy was born and raised in Madison Heights, a suburb of Metro Detroit. She went to Michigan State University (Go Green!) and studied Elementary Education. While at MSU she met her husband, Yoel. They married in summer of 2007 and moved to Indiana, where Amy continued to be a long-distance MYLead volunteer while teaching in 4th and 6th grade classrooms. Amy and Yoel recently moved back to Michigan and are living on the west side of the state in Allendale.
Leadership
Amy has been involved with MYLead since it began 2002. She loves being a part of MYLead and seeing the immense positive impact the organization and volunteers create. She was a member of Team Alumni for two years, a Group Facilitator for two years, and has served as Co-Assistant Director of Recruitment for the past three years.
As both a teacher and student Amy held various leadership roles including Chair of the Human Understanding and Diversity Committee, Textbook Adoption Committee, Student Facilitator of the Multi-Racial Unity Living Experience, and National Honor Society and Class President.
Employment
Amy is a teacher between classrooms and is currently working part-time as a substitute teacher while going to grad school full-time. She is also volunteering with various Student Affairs offices as GVSU.
Academics
Amy holds a B.A. from Michigan State University, in Elementary Education with a major in Language Arts. She graduated from Madison High School in Madison Heights in 2002. She is also currently enrolled in the College Student Affairs Leadership Graduate Program at Grand Valley State University.
Daily routine
Amy’s daily routine depends on whether she has class, work, projects, studying, visiting, or a combination of a few things to do. She is extremely close to her family and communicates with them all day through email and phone calls. She loves reading, listening to music, walking, shopping, sports, visiting her nieces and nephew, traveling, and hanging out with her hubby. Amy also loves learning about new cultures and people from around the world.
Favorite quote: “We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.” -Marian Wright Edelman
